NEWS DESKIn a heartwarming and inspiring gesture, a rural mosque committee in India has honored a retiring Imam with a substantial monetary gift—something rarely seen in South Asian village communities.
On Monday, several Indian media outlets reported that in Basni village of Nagaur district, located in the state of Rajasthan, a retiring Imam was gifted an honorarium of INR 33 lakh, equivalent to approximately BDT 43.47 lakh.
The recipient, Maulana Syed Mohammad Ali, served the local mosque for many years. Alongside leading prayers, he played a vital role in providing religious education and promoting social harmony and community service. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, both the mosque authorities and the local villagers collectively raised funds to present him with the generous parting gift upon his retirement.
Community members noted that Maulana Ali’s role extended well beyond the pulpit. He was known for encouraging interfaith harmony, increasing social awareness, and supporting the moral development of youth in the village.
This is not the first time such a gesture has occurred in Rajasthan. Similar honors were previously reported in Sikar and Ladnun, both in the Shekhawati region. However, this latest recognition in Nagaur reflects a growing trend of appreciating the lifelong dedication of religious leaders.
The initiative has received widespread praise on social media, with many calling it an example worth emulating across communities.
