NEWS DESKFormer U.S. President Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to remove cancerous cells from his skin, according to a report by NBC News citing a spokesperson on Thursday. The 82-year-old is said to be recovering well.
The procedure, known as Mohs surgery, is a common treatment for certain types of skin cancer, particularly non-melanoma skin cancers. It involves the precise removal of cancerous skin tissue while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
This latest surgery comes just months after Biden publicly revealed in May that he had been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer — a serious but hormone-sensitive form of the disease. His medical team believes the condition is responding positively to treatment.
When contacted by Reuters for further details, a spokesperson for Biden declined to comment on the surgery.
This is not the first time Biden has undergone skin-related medical procedures. In 2023, during his regular presidential health check-up, doctors removed a skin lesion which was later diagnosed as a common form of skin cancer.
Biden’s physical and mental fitness had been under scrutiny during his presidency, especially as he sought re-election in the 2024 U.S. presidential race. However, after a widely criticized debate performance against former President Donald Trump in July 2024, concerns grew within the Democratic Party. Biden eventually withdrew from the race.
When elected in 2020, Joe Biden became the oldest U.S. president in history. However, that record was surpassed last year by Donald Trump, who is currently 79 years old.
Since leaving office, Biden has maintained a low public profile, making only occasional appearances. In April, he delivered a speech defending the Social Security Administration against proposed cuts by the Trump administration.
