The United States is set to significantly increase the cost of its B1/B2 tourist visa, with fees more than doubling starting October 1, 2025. Under the new policy, the visa fee will rise from the current $185 to $435 — equivalent to approximately 53,000 Bangladeshi Taka.

The move comes as part of a broader immigration funding package passed in Congress under pressure from former President Donald Trump. Known informally as the "Big Beautiful Bill," the legislation aims to generate more revenue to support increased security and administrative costs associated with visa processing.

With this change, the U.S. will become one of the most expensive countries in the world for obtaining a tourist visa. A family of five, for example, would now need to pay nearly $2,200 (around 250,000 Taka) just for visa application fees.

Officials have indicated that the increased fee may be refundable in certain circumstances, though no clear guidelines have yet been published.

Experts warn that the steep price hike could deter international tourists, particularly from lower-income countries. There are also concerns about the impact on upcoming major global events in the United States, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Spectators — and even athletes — may be discouraged by the high cost of obtaining a visa.

As the implementation date approaches, travelers and travel agencies worldwide are closely watching for further updates and clarifications on the new rules.
