NEWS DESKUS President Donald Trump admitted to pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu into accepting his 20-point plan to release the hostages, warning him he has “got to be fine with it.”
Speaking to Israeli journalist Barak Ravid, Trump explained how he told Netanyahu, “Bibi, this is your chance for victory.”
"Bibi took it very far, and Israel lost a lot of support in the world. Now I am gonna get all that support back," he said.
“He was fine with it," Trump told Ravid. "He's got to be fine with it. He has no choice. With me, you got to be fine."
Trump issued a statement on Saturday thanking Israel for abiding by his call to halt the bombing of Gaza "in order to give the hostage-release and peace deal a chance to be completed." The thanks came after a personal phone call between the two world leaders on Friday, where Netanyahu admitted to having hesitations on the deal.
"We had great receptivity for our plan — every country of the world in favor. Bibi is in favor. Hamas went a long way — they want to do it. Now we will need to close it," Trump told Ravid.
Support from Turkey
Trump explained that the deal was also helped along by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, an ally of Hamas and a vocal critic of both Israel and the war in Gaza.
“Erdogan helped a lot. He is a tough guy, but he is a friend of mine and he was great," Trump said.
A US official told Axios that Trump spoke to Erdogan on Friday, ahead of Hamas' response, and asked him to make sure Hamas didn't say no.
"President Trump told Erdogan: 'I did a lot for you and now I need you to do this,'" the US official said.
