Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has stated that it is now "completely clear" that the United States is Russia's opponent.

He made these remarks on Thursday, commenting on recent actions by President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine, which he described as part of a war against Russia.

During his election campaign, Trump had promised to end the war in Ukraine quickly. His recent actions have been labeled as part of a "proxy war" between Washington and Moscow. After assuming office, Trump took steps to end the conflict, but recently expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump, who has previously referred to Russia as a "paper tiger," said on Wednesday that he had canceled a planned summit with Putin. He also noted that the U.S. Treasury had imposed sanctions on two of Russia's largest oil companies.

Medvedev, who currently serves as the Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council, referred to Trump’s statements in a Telegram post, saying: “The United States is our adversary. Their loudmouthed 'peacebuilders' have now fully paved the way for war with Russia. The decisions taken by the U.S. are acts of war against Russia. Now, Trump is fully aligned with 'crazy Europe' in their actions.”

In August, Trump had ordered two nuclear submarines to be deployed closer to Russia in response to Medvedev's provocative remarks about the risks of war. Medvedev had previously stated that the actions of the "Trumpian pendulum" meant that Russia could strike Ukraine with various types of weapons without considering unnecessary negotiations.

After eight years of fighting between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian government forces in eastern Ukraine, Putin ordered the invasion of Ukrainian territory in February 2022. He has repeatedly stated that Russia is ready to negotiate peace, though no significant progress has been made.
