U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday pledged to distribute a $2000 tariff dividend directly to most American citizens, asserting that the plan will be funded entirely through the nation’s booming tariff revenues. The announcement, made via Trump’s Truth Social account, comes as his trade policies face a critical legal test before the U.S. Supreme Court.

In his Sunday morning post, President Trump said the United States is “taking in trillions of dollars” through tariffs and will “soon begin paying down our enormous $37 trillion debt.” He added that a dividend of at least $2000 per person, excluding high-income earners, would be paid directly to Americans.

No other information about who will be eligible and when the payments will begin has been disclosed yet.

The announcement comes amid heightened legal scrutiny of Trump’s tariff policies. The U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing the scope of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), under which Trump justified his wide-ranging levies on imports from China and other nations.

Lower courts have previously ruled that many of the tariffs exceeded executive authority. A final ruling from the nation’s highest court could determine whether the president can continue using tariffs as a unilateral fiscal instrument.

Despite the pending review, Trump remains defiant. “People that are against tariffs are fools!” he posted on Truth Social, claiming that the tariffs have strengthened America’s manufacturing base and made the country “the richest, most respected in the world.”

Defending his trade policies, Trump pointed to strong market performance and robust job creation. “401(k)s are at record highs,” he wrote, adding that the nation’s factories are “booming” and that the U.S. is “taking in trillions” from tariff revenues.

According to the Treasury Department, customs duties collected in fiscal year 2025 amounted to $195 billion, as per a report by Business Insider.

In an earlier interview with One America News Network, Trump had floated the idea of a $1000–$2000 distribution to citizens, claiming that tariff revenues could generate “over a trillion dollars a year.”
