U.S. President Donald Trump signed a crucial funding bill on Wednesday, officially ending the country’s longest-ever government shutdown. Speaking from the Oval Office before signing the bill, Trump declared, “Today is a great day. Our government is back to work. It should never have been shut down in the first place.”
The passage of the bill will allow federal employees to return to work, restore funding for government agencies and departments, and ensure that millions of workers who have gone unpaid since October 1 receive their back pay.
Trump noted that the shutdown lasted 43 days, surpassing the 35-day record from his first term. He criticized Democrats, accusing them of being “happy to see millions of Americans suffer.”
The president highlighted the shutdown’s wide-reaching impact, citing over 20,000 canceled or delayed flights, disruptions to food assistance programs, and thousands of federal employees either furloughed or working without pay.
Trump urged voters to remember this moment during the 2026 midterm elections and called on Republicans to stay united and work to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives.
