After the British news outlet BBC refused to apologize and offer compensation, President Donald Trump said he will take legal action next week over how his remarks were edited in the Panorama documentary.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday evening (November 14), Trump said, “We will probably file a lawsuit against them (the BBC) sometime next week, for an amount between one and five billion dollars.”

The BBC stated that the editing of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech “inadvertently created the impression that President Trump directly incited violence.” The broadcaster apologized for this but said it would not provide any financial compensation.

Amid the controversy, BBC Director General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness resigned last week. Speaking about the planned legal action, Trump told reporters, “I feel I have to do this. They committed fraud. They changed the words that came out of my mouth.”

Trump also said he has not yet raised the issue with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, but he plans to call him sometime this week.

Earlier, Trump’s lawyers warned that if the BBC did not retract the report, apologize, and compensate Trump, they would file a lawsuit.

The dispute began when allegations surfaced that a BBC report on Trump’s speech from the day of the 2021 Capitol Hill attack was edited deceptively. The video showed Trump speaking to his supporters, but according to The Telegraph, two statements made 54 minutes apart were shown together as if spoken consecutively.
