Palestinian-American U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has introduced a resolution in Congress seeking formal recognition of what she describes as Israeli genocide in Gaza. The proposal, submitted last Friday, has been endorsed by 20 other Democratic lawmakers.
Beyond the Democratic Party, Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and Independent Senator Bernie Sanders have also accused Israel of committing acts that they characterize as genocide.
The resolution has additionally received support from progressive lawmakers Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, potential presidential candidate Ro Khanna, and Gen-Z Representative Maxwell Alejandro Frost.
If passed, the resolution would mark formal U.S. recognition of alleged genocide in Gaza and could trigger measures to halt American arms shipments to Israel. The proposal suggests that U.S. weapons may have been used in the Gaza conflict and calls for investigations, appropriate legal action, and possible sanctions on Israel.
The United States remains Israel’s strongest ally and leading military supporter. Nearly two years into the Gaza war, more than 69,000 people have been reported killed in Israeli strikes, most of them women and children, according to the report. Wide areas of the Gaza Strip have been reduced to rubble amid the ongoing bombardment.
