President Donald Trump has warned that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine could escalate into a third world war. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday (11 December), local time, he made the remarks while expressing frustration over the prolonged fighting.
According to the President, 25,000 people have been killed in the Russia-Ukraine war in the past month alone. He voiced deep disappointment over the continued bloodshed.
Trump said,
“I want to see this killing stop. Twenty-five thousand people died last month. This kind of situation ultimately leads to World War III. I’ve said before, if everyone keeps playing this kind of game, a third world war can begin. I want to stop it. We are working very hard for that.”
The United States has been working with both sides on a peace agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In November, Washington released a 28-point peace proposal, though it drew criticism for appearing too favorable to Russia.
A revised plan later presented a shortened 20-point framework, accompanied by a separate document detailing security guarantees and post-war reconstruction for Ukraine.
During his briefing with reporters, Trump also stressed the importance of disarmament. “One of the things I talked about with China is disarmament… I’ve discussed it with China. I’ve discussed it with Russia as well,” he said.
