President Donald Trump is reportedly exploring the idea of forming a new “superpower club” as an alternative to the Group of Seven (G7), a bloc dominated by European nations.
Politico reported that Trump has shown discomfort with the G7—whose members include Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States—particularly because most are European and the European Union, a frequent target of Trump, is deeply intertwined with the alliance.
According to the report, an expanded and unpublished version of the national security strategy released by the White House last week includes a proposal for a “Core Five” or “C5,” comprising the US, China, Russia, India and Japan. The proposed grouping would hold regular leader-level summits similar to the G7. Its first agenda item would focus on Middle East security, including efforts to normalize ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
The White House has denied the existence of any such document, but US security analysts say the concept aligns with Trump’s foreign-policy instincts. Some experts, however, argue that such a bloc could weaken Western unity and elevate authoritarian powers—particularly Russia—over traditional European allies.
