US President Donald Trump has said he will receive $1 billion in compensation from the US government for damages caused by the FBI raid on his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida in 2022, adding that he plans to donate the entire amount to charitable causes.

Trump made the remarks last Friday while addressing a Republican Party rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He said he had filed a lawsuit seeking compensation from the state treasury for the damage caused during the FBI operation at his palatial Mar-a-Lago home.

“The group of thugs who carried out the raid on my house in 2022 caused damage, and I filed a lawsuit demanding $1 billion in compensation from the state treasury,” Trump told the rally. “That case has been decided, and I am getting the money.”

Calling the situation unprecedented, Trump added, “It’s a very strange thing that I filed the lawsuit, and now, as president, I am effectively compensating myself—because without the US president’s signature, this money cannot be released. Does that make any sense? Nothing like this has ever happened in the history of the United States.”

Trump also said some people had advised him to keep the money, but he rejected the idea.

“I will not keep this money for myself. I have decided to donate this compensation to some public welfare or charitable cause. I will soon give this money to a good charity,” he said.

The FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August 2022 while he was serving his first term as president, as part of an investigation into allegations of mishandling or stealing classified government documents.

Trump has repeatedly described the raid as politically motivated and has continued to criticize US law enforcement agencies over the operation.
