U.S. President Donald Trump has held talks with Colombian President Gustavo Petro in an effort to ease strained relations between the two countries. The two leaders met at the White House for the first time, according to a report by the BBC.

The British broadcaster reported on Tuesday that both leaders described the meeting as cordial and constructive. Relations between the two countries had been tense for some time, with Trump previously accusing Petro of facilitating drug trafficking into the United States. At one point, Trump had even threatened military action.

However, Trump’s tone shifted following the meeting, expressing a willingness to work with the Colombian leader.

“Petro and I are not best friends,” Trump said. “At first, I felt offended because I didn’t know him. Now, we want to work together.”

President Petro said that any dialogue between leaders is important and described the meeting as very positive. He added that the talks concluded in a hopeful and constructive atmosphere.
