The incident prompted a campus-wide lockdown, according to a statement released by the university. South Carolina State University is a historically Black college and university (HBCU).
In a statement posted on the university’s official Facebook page, officials said the shooting occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. inside an apartment at the Hugine Suites student housing complex. No additional details were immediately available, including whether a suspect remains at large.
University authorities said they have not yet released the identities of the deceased or provided information about the condition of the injured individual.
South Carolina State University enrolls more than 3,000 students and is located in Orangeburg. It is one of two historically Black institutions in the city, the other being Claflin University. The riverside college town lies about 40 miles southeast of Columbia, the state capital.
A person who answered the phone at the university’s Department of Public Safety on Thursday night said they were not authorized to provide information about the incident. The university said it has requested assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate the shooting and confirmed that all classes were canceled the following day.
