The U.S. military could be prepared to launch a strike on Iran by the end of this week, but President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter who spoke to CNN.

Sources said the White House has been informed that, following a significant buildup of U.S. air and naval power in the Middle East in recent days, American forces could be ready for military action by the weekend. However, Trump is reportedly weighing arguments both for and against a strike and consulting with advisers and allies before making a determination.

Senior national security officials met Wednesday in the White House Situation Room to assess options. On the same day, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner briefed Trump on their indirect talks with Iranian representatives.

It remains unclear whether a decision will be made before the weekend.

Indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran were held Tuesday in Geneva, lasting about three and a half hours and conducted through the exchange of written notes. The meeting ended without a final resolution.

Iran’s chief negotiator said both sides agreed on a set of “guiding principles,” but a U.S. official cautioned that many details still need to be discussed before any comprehensive agreement can be reached.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said diplomacy remains Trump’s preferred course of action. However, she emphasized that military options remain on the table if diplomatic efforts fail.

The developments underscore heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, as diplomatic engagement continues alongside visible military preparations in the region.
