A White House official said the visit follows months of “excellent and constructive communication” between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Speaking on Thursday about the planned visit, Trump described it as “going to be a tremendous trip.”
The announcement of the China visit came shortly before a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that struck down tariffs previously imposed by Trump on several countries around the world. Reports suggest that the tariff strategy had been used by the president as leverage to influence other nations to support his policies publicly.
Tariffs are expected to feature prominently on the agenda in Beijing, along with China’s response to US trade measures. This could include discussions over agricultural trade, particularly soybeans — once one of the top US exports to China — amid concerns that Beijing may scale back purchases in retaliation for US trade threats.
