Members of the Democratic Party in the United States Congress have indicated they may block proposals to allocate additional funding to the United States Department of Defense (Pentagon) for the ongoing war against Iran. They argue that the administration of Donald Trump has failed to provide a clear strategy or timeline for the conflict.

Last year, Congress approved a defense budget of nearly $900 billion for the current fiscal year with bipartisan support. However, as the costs of the Iran war continue to rise, the Trump administration has informed lawmakers that additional funding may be required.

According to analysts, the war is costing more than $890 million per day for U.S. taxpayers.

Speaking on the Meet the Press program on NBC News on Sunday, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said the administration has completely failed to justify the reasons or objectives behind what he described as a self-declared war in the Middle East.

Jeffries also complained that although lawmakers received briefings from the administration, officials have not clarified how much funding the Pentagon will request or how long the war may last.

Meanwhile, the chances of securing the 60 votes required in the United States Senate to pass such funding legislation appear slim.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut also strongly opposed the proposal during an appearance on State of the Union on CNN. Murphy said, “If you truly support the troops, you should vote against funding this war so that we can bring them out of harm’s way.”

Although most Republican senators last week opposed efforts to limit President Trump’s wartime powers, some have hinted that their stance could change if the conflict drags on. If even a small group of Republicans breaks ranks, securing additional funding from Congress could become a major challenge for the Trump administration.
