U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that the long-standing hostility between the United States and Cuba could ease, suggesting that the two countries may soon reach an agreement.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said the United States could reach a deal with Cuba in the near future.

“Cuba is interested in reaching an agreement. I think we will come to an understanding very soon, or we will take the necessary steps depending on the situation,” Trump said.

However, he also made it clear that his administration intends to address issues with Iran before moving forward fully with Cuba.

Cuba is currently experiencing one of the worst economic crises in its history. Decades of sanctions, combined with a recent fuel shortage, have severely strained the country’s economy. The island nation, which relies heavily on imported oil for electricity generation and transportation, has been forced to impose frequent power outages and limit several public services.

Amid these challenges, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced on Friday that discussions with the United States have already begun.

In remarks broadcast on state television, Díaz-Canel said the goal of the talks is to resolve long-standing disputes between the two nations through dialogue.

“Our aim is to settle the long-standing conflict between our two countries through dialogue. I hope these discussions will help us move away from confrontation,” he said.

Despite signaling a willingness to improve relations, some of Trump’s remarks have stirred controversy. He previously suggested that Cuba is on the verge of collapse and could potentially be “taken over in a friendly way.”

U.S. officials have hinted that Cuba would need to undertake political and economic reforms in order to gain relief from sanctions. Meanwhile, Cuba has made it clear that any negotiations must respect the country’s independence and sovereignty.

After years of tensions over migration, security, and sanctions, news of renewed dialogue has drawn close attention from regional allies and investors, who are closely watching how the situation develops.
