Amid the growing importance of drones, or unmanned aerial systems (UAS), in modern warfare, the United States Army has taken a major step to modernize how it acquires military technology. In collaboration with Amazon, the Army is developing a digital marketplace designed to simplify and accelerate the procurement of drone systems.

The initiative brings together Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Army Enterprise Cloud Management Agency to build an online platform aimed at delivering advanced drone technology quickly and efficiently to soldiers in the field.

Known as the “UAS Marketplace,” the platform will serve as a unified digital portal for various U.S. Army units, government partners, and allied nations. Users will be able to compare verified drone systems, place orders directly, and provide ratings and feedback after use—mirroring the familiar experience of commercial e-commerce platforms.

The Army views this initiative as a transformative shift in defense procurement. Officials believe it will enhance transparency and foster a more competitive environment, opening doors for small and medium-sized defense innovators. This, in turn, is expected to accelerate advancements in drone technology.

Brent Ingram, the Army’s lead for procurement, said the effort aims to reduce barriers to entry in the defense sector and build partnerships with a broader range of innovators, ultimately creating a more responsive and effective defense system.

Meanwhile, UAS project manager Daniel Medaglia emphasized that the platform will encourage competition and innovation, enabling soldiers to access cutting-edge technologies tailored to mission needs. He noted that the goal is to deliver the right technology at the right time and at the necessary scale.

Traditionally, introducing new military technologies within the United States Department of Defense involves complex bureaucratic procedures and lengthy budget approvals from Congress. The new Amazon-powered marketplace is expected to streamline these processes, enabling faster decision-making and deployment.

Experts suggest that beyond modernizing drone procurement, this digital platform could significantly influence future warfare strategies by integrating speed, flexibility, and innovation into military operations.
