The United States will soon begin issuing a new version of its passport that includes an image of Donald Trump, according to a State Department official who spoke on Tuesday.
The official said the redesigned passports will initially be available to applicants renewing their documents in person at the Washington Passport Agency. Online renewals and applications submitted through other locations will continue using the existing design for now.
The move is part of broader commemorations marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. While Trump’s image has previously appeared on commemorative coins and park passes, this would be the most prominent and consequential use to date, given that passports serve as internationally recognized identification documents typically valid for 10 years.
According to the released design, the inside cover of the passport will feature a portrait of Trump along with a gold-colored signature. United States Department of State spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the special passport will include customized artwork, though its security features will remain unchanged.
The back cover will display a scene inspired by the United States Declaration of Independence. The current passport design includes artwork depicting Francis Scott Key.
Previously, the United States Department of the Interior added Trump’s image to park passes, and commemorative coins bearing his likeness have also been approved as part of the anniversary celebrations.
