The Pentagon has officially informed Congress that the United States has spent approximately $25 billion to date on military operations involving Iran.
Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday (April 29), Jules Hurst, the Pentagon’s acting comptroller, provided the first formal financial accounting of ‘Operation Epic Fury.’
Hurst noted that the majority of these funds were directed toward munitions and weaponry, with the remainder allocated for operations, maintenance, and the replacement of equipment, including radars and aircraft. While this figure is equivalent to NASA’s entire annual budget, Hurst did not clarify if the estimate includes the cost of rebuilding damaged military infrastructure at regional bases. Representative Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the committee, welcomed the disclosure after weeks of seeking financial transparency regarding the conflict.
The ongoing hostilities, which began on February 28, have had a direct impact on the domestic economy. Disrupted supplies of oil and natural gas have driven gasoline prices to a four-year high, while rising costs for fertilizers and agricultural products are adding further pressure on households. Public support for the conflict also appears to be waning; according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, approval for the military engagement has dropped to 34%, down from 38% in mid-March.
