Paraguay, one of the surprise performers in the World Cup qualifiers after defeating football powerhouses Brazil and Argentina, stumbled in their opening match of the tournament, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to the United States.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured the emphatic victory in Los Angeles. Folarin Balogun scored twice, while Giovanni Reyna added another goal. Paraguay’s Damien Bobadilla also contributed to the scoreline with an own goal.
It was the first World Cup meeting between the United States and Paraguay since the inaugural tournament in 1930. On that occasion, the Americans won 3-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Bert Patenaude. Nearly a century later, the co-hosts once again claimed a convincing victory.
The United States made a dream start, taking the lead in the seventh minute. Christian Pulisic’s dangerous pass caused problems in the Paraguay defense, and Bobadilla inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting a clearance.
The hosts continued to dominate and extended their lead with two more goals before halftime. Balogun scored the second goal in the 31st minute, meeting a pinpoint cross from Pulisic near the penalty spot and finishing clinically.
The striker struck again in first-half stoppage time. Malik Tillman delivered a defense-splitting pass, and Balogun calmly slotted the ball into the net to make it 3-0.
With a comfortable lead, the United States remained organized and composed after the break. Paraguay showed greater resistance in the second half and managed to create some pressure of their own.
Against the run of play, Paraguay pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute. Mauricio found the net after being set up by Julio Enciso, offering his side a glimmer of hope.
However, the Americans continued to create chances and sealed the result deep into stoppage time. In the seventh minute of added time, Giovanni Reyna drove into the penalty area and finished brilliantly into the far corner.
Reyna’s strike proved to be the final shot of the match, wrapping up an impressive 4-1 victory for the United States and giving the tournament co-hosts a perfect start to their World Cup campaign.
