U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to host a series of high-profile sporting events aimed at reinforcing his image of strength and leadership both at home and abroad. As part of that effort, the White House is set to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) mixed martial arts event on Sunday to mark Flag Day and Trump’s 80th birthday.
At Trump’s request, a UFC arena has been constructed on the White House South Lawn. The president has reportedly compared the venue to Paris’s Eiffel Tower, highlighting its symbolic significance. The UFC event is only one component of a broader sports-focused agenda. Later this summer, Trump has also reached an agreement to bring an IndyCar Grand Prix race to Washington’s National Mall.
The initiative comes as the FIFA World Cup gets underway this week, with the United States serving as a co-host alongside Canada and Mexico. Looking further ahead, the Trump administration is also seeking to capitalize on growing excitement surrounding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, using major sporting spectacles to elevate the president’s geopolitical brand and international profile.
Critics have described the strategy as an example of “sportswashing” — the use of major sporting events to divert attention from controversial policies or political issues.
Nick Watanabe, a professor at the University of South Carolina, argued that while the term has traditionally been associated with authoritarian governments and oil-rich states, it now increasingly applies to the United States.
“Trump is trying to position himself as the singular figure capable of leading America into its 250th anniversary celebrations,” Watanabe said.
However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended the UFC event, calling it a unique demonstration of America’s soft diplomatic power and cultural influence.
World leaders have also paid close attention to Trump’s growing association with international sports. In December 2025, FIFA President Gianni Infantino awarded Trump a FIFA Peace Prize. The following month, Trump launched a military operation aimed at removing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from power and later authorized airstrikes against Iran.
According to reports, Trump is scheduled to depart for France immediately after the White House UFC event to attend the G7 summit. French officials are said to have adjusted the summit schedule to accommodate his attendance.
Trump’s relationship with UFC dates back decades. Long before entering politics, he hosted one of the promotion’s earliest sanctioned events at the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 2000.
The planned White House event has sparked significant debate among politicians and members of the sporting community.
Democratic Representative Sharice Davids of Kansas, a former professional MMA fighter, criticized the project, arguing that building a large arena at the White House while Americans face rising living costs and ongoing international conflicts sends the wrong message.
“When prices are soaring and the country is dealing with major challenges, politicizing sports in this way is not appropriate,” she said.
Republican leaders have pushed back against the criticism. Former baseball star and Republican supporter Mark Teixeira argued that opponents are exaggerating the controversy.
“People upset about a sporting event in Washington should remember that the country faces much bigger issues,” he said.
The athletes participating in the event have also expressed excitement.
American fighter Sean O’Malley, a vocal Trump supporter, is expected to be among the event’s attractions. Canadian fighter Aiemann Zahabi said he is prepared to receive boos from American spectators but still views the occasion as a historic celebration.
“Trump is an unpredictable figure, but this event feels like a major festival and a unique moment in sports history,” Zahabi said.
As the White House transforms into an unlikely sporting venue, the event is expected to further blur the lines between politics, entertainment, and international diplomacy—an approach that has become increasingly central to Trump’s public image.
