The United States has introduced several changes to its visa policies from the beginning of 2026, with new restrictions affecting applicants from 75 countries, including Bangladesh, in certain visa categories. While some visa services remain available, application procedures have become more rigorous.

Under the updated policy framework, changes have been introduced in the processing of certain immigrant visas and permanent residency-related applications. The changes may lead to delays in the processing of family-based immigration, employment-based permanent residency, Green Card, and Diversity Visa applications, though these processes have not been completely suspended.

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka is expected to continue conducting interviews for eligible visa applicants. However, if the new restrictions apply, visa issuance may be delayed even after the interview stage.

Meanwhile, tourist and business visa services remain operational. However, some applicants may be required to provide additional financial assurances or submit a visa bond, depending on the decision of consular officers during the interview process.

Student visas and employment-based non-immigrant visas are also still available. However, stricter security checks, financial capability assessments, and verification of sponsor-related information may result in longer processing times compared with previous years.

Currently, all visa applications are being accepted through scheduled appointments at the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka. Applicants are being advised to ensure that their forms are accurate, documents are complete, and required information is updated on time to avoid possible rejection.

Experts say the biggest impact of the new policy is likely to be felt by immigrant visa and Green Card applicants. Although tourist, student, and employment-based non-immigrant visa programs remain active, applicants are facing more extensive screening and verification procedures.

Authorities have advised applicants to carefully review the latest requirements and guidelines before submitting applications, as visa policies and procedures may continue to evolve.
