Veteran US Senator Mitch McConnell has revealed that he is recovering from a fall and a mild case of pneumonia, explaining that his health has delayed his return to the Senate.

The 84-year-old Republican from Kentucky made the statement after weeks of speculation over his condition following his hospitalization in mid-June. His office also released a photograph of McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao, holding Sunday's edition of The Washington Post.

In a statement, McConnell said he briefly lost consciousness after the fall and was taken to hospital, where doctors conducted extensive tests to determine the cause of the incident.

He said physicians confirmed that he had suffered no broken bones or concussion and had not experienced a heart attack or stroke. Doctors also found no signs of a tumor or internal bleeding.

Addressing speculation over his prolonged absence, McConnell said people of his generation are often reluctant to speak publicly about the physical challenges that come with aging.

He also recalled contracting polio as a child, noting that the illness has continued to affect his mobility throughout his life. "Those challenges have not become easier with age," he said, adding that last month's fall ultimately led to his hospitalization.
