First Lady Melania Trump has been largely absent from public view for several weeks, while President Donald Trump’s close aide Natalie Harp has appeared alongside him at a series of high-profile events and trips.
The contrast has prompted growing media speculation, although there is no confirmed evidence linking Melania’s reduced public appearances to Harp’s close working relationship with the president.
According to NBC News, Melania was last seen in public on July 19, when she sat beside Trump at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to watch the FIFA World Cup final. She was absent from the July 22 ceremony at which Trump received the remains of four US service members killed in a military operation in the Middle East. She also did not attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on July 24 or the funeral of late Senator Lindsey Graham on July 28.
Melania’s public schedule has been considerably lighter than during Trump’s first term. A photo-based analysis by Newsweek found that she had appeared publicly at 34 events from the beginning of 2026 through the period covered by its report. The Daily Beast, meanwhile, counted 38 days of public appearances this year. A senior adviser to the first lady told NBC News that Melania places greater emphasis on “results rather than public appearances.”
Melania reportedly spends much of her time between Florida and New York, where her son Barron Trump attends college. She has previously stayed out of the public eye for extended periods. According to Newsweek, she was absent from public view for nearly a month between January and February this year.
At the same time, 35-year-old Natalie Harp has increasingly been seen accompanying Trump on important trips and at official events. After the NATO summit in Turkey last month, Harp was among a small group of officials who accompanied Trump on a military aircraft when he secretly departed Ankara. Most officials and journalists travelling with the president had remained aboard Air Force One and were reportedly unaware in advance that Trump would change aircraft amid concerns over a possible attack by Iran.
Harp is reported to assist with Trump’s Truth Social account and communications. She travelled with the president aboard Marine One on August 11 and 16. She was also present with Trump at the July 22 ceremony for the military personnel killed in the Middle East operation. Harp accompanied Trump on his visit to China in May, while Melania did not make that trip.
New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan have reported that Trump considers Harp one of his most trusted aides. According to their reporting, Harp also writes notes intended to encourage the president and leaves them in various private places associated with him. One such note reportedly read, “You are the most important person to me.”
A brother of Harp has described her relationship with the president as “very unhealthy,” according to reports. He is reportedly no longer in contact with her.
A White House spokesperson, however, defended Harp and praised her loyalty. The spokesperson said Trump had secured an unprecedented level of loyalty from his staff and administration officials and described Harp as a highly valued and trusted member of the White House team.
While Melania’s prolonged absence and Harp’s frequent presence alongside Trump have generated speculation in the media and on social platforms, there is no reliable evidence establishing a connection between the two developments. Reports citing people close to the first lady have instead pointed to her personal schedule, family commitments and time spent in Florida and New York as factors behind her limited public appearances.
