Following a deadlock in ongoing diplomatic efforts to halt hostilities between Washington and Tehran, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has ordered the Iranian delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York to leave the country immediately. The directive was issued late Monday night, according to a U.S. official and a second source familiar with the matter.
According to reports by Axios, the Iranian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Although the delegation was already planning to depart New York shortly, Rubio's directive served as a rare and stringent diplomatic move that publicly highlights the deep-seated distrust between Washington and Iran.
Mediators from Qatar had been attempting to broker a diplomatic compromise to end the conflict between the two nations, but talks failed to yield significant progress. Neither Washington nor Iran was willing to compromise on their core positions.
As negotiations hit an impasse late Monday afternoon, the U.S. mission to the United Nations informed the Iranian mission that Araghchi's delegation was required to leave New York immediately. Following the directive, the delegation headed to the airport and departed on a flight bound for Doha early Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Qatari mediators are continuing their diplomatic engagements with both sides, attempting to discuss a potential framework for a compromise. However, broader efforts to de-escalate regional tensions face mounting challenges amid the current diplomatic stalemate.
