U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a one-time payment of $90 for more than 20 million seniors enrolled in the government's Medicare program, saying the initiative is intended to help offset the cost of monthly health insurance premiums.

In a social media post on Friday night, Trump said the payments would be funded through the Medicare Improvement Fund, noting that Congress had allocated $2 billion to the fund to enhance Medicare's traditional fee-for-service program.

The White House later released additional details of the plan, stating that most eligible beneficiaries will receive the $90 payment through direct deposit into their bank accounts in early October. Those who do not have direct deposit arrangements will receive paper checks mailed to the address registered with Medicare, with deliveries also expected in early October.

The announcement comes just weeks before the U.S. midterm elections in November, as Republicans seek to retain control of Congress. Although the party currently holds majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, its margins are narrow.

The move also comes amid rising concerns over the cost of living and persistently high energy prices, which have increased financial pressure on American households. In recent months, Trump has unveiled several proposals aimed at providing direct financial relief to voters.

Last month, the president said his administration would consider issuing $5,000 checks to all adult U.S. citizens if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress after the midterm elections. However, the proposal has drawn skepticism from economists, policy analysts, and even some Republican lawmakers over its fiscal implications.

Separately, the Trump administration has launched another initiative to provide $500 payments to approximately one million Americans. According to the administration, the payments are refunds for excess fees collected from individuals who purchased health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace.
