A loud explosion occurred this afternoon outside the Public Prosecutor (PP) room of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. The incident took place around 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. No casualties were reported.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the blast was caused by a crude cocktail explosive. However, police officials said it appeared to be a small firecracker-type device, possibly a “chocolate bomb.”
The explosion happened in front of the PP office housed on the ground floor of Reboti Mansion, a building where many public prosecutors sit and where several courtrooms are located on the upper floors.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki said, “We were working in our office when we suddenly heard a loud explosion that sounded like a cocktail blast. When we came out, we saw mud splattered across the drain area, and the court walls were covered with it.”
Calling the incident a warning for the court premises, Faruki added that it might have been carried out to create panic within the judiciary. He urged the authorities to treat the matter seriously.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Zahirul Islam said the incident was immediately reported to Kotwali Police Station, whose officers later inspected the site.
General Secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, Syed Nazrul Islam, condemned the incident and expressed concern. He suggested that this blast could be linked to the series of disturbances across the country following the verdict involving Sheikh Hasina announced the previous day. He demanded that those responsible be swiftly brought to justice.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Moniruzzaman said, “We inspected the spot but found no evidence of a cocktail explosive. It appears to be something like small firecrackers or a chocolate bomb.”
