The investigation committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs submitted its report to Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday.
According to the report, the committee found no evidence of the fire starting from any source other than a short circuit. The findings were disclosed at a media briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, where Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Mohammad Shafiqul Alam shared details with journalists.
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul and Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Hossain were also present. Before the press secretary’s remarks on the fire incident, they discussed matters related to the referendum ordinance.
The press secretary explained that the fire originated from a short circuit in a pile of courier service parcels stored inside the Cargo Village. The presence of flammable materials caused the flames to spread rapidly. Additionally, the small iron cages used in courier storage areas made it difficult for firefighters and other agencies to contain the fire.
The report submitted on Tuesday reflects these findings, and the issue was discussed extensively at the day’s meeting of the Advisory Council, Shafiqul Alam said.
He added that alongside local investigative and intelligence agencies, a team from Turkey also participated in the probe. Three other committees were formed to investigate the incident separately, though their reports have not yet been received.
On 18 October, a massive fire broke out at the Cargo Village near Gate 8 of the airport. A total of 37 firefighting units worked to bring the blaze under control. Airport authorities temporarily halted flight operations during the incident. Firefighters from Bangladesh Biman, the Army, and the Navy joined the effort. It took nearly 27 hours for responders to fully extinguish the fire.
