The US Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security alert regarding the situation in Bangladesh ahead of the 13th parliamentary election and a referendum. The embassy warned that political rallies and protests may increase in the coming days and advised US citizens in Bangladesh to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations.
The alert was issued on Monday, December 15.
According to the Election Commission, the parliamentary election and referendum are scheduled for February 12. The embassy warned that as the election approaches, political activities may become more frequent and intense.
The alert noted that even protests that begin peacefully can quickly turn violent. As a result, US citizens were urged to exercise maximum caution and avoid large public gatherings.
The embassy also advised US nationals to remain aware of their surroundings, monitor local media regularly, and stay away from crowds. In case of emergencies, citizens were advised to contact the US Embassy in Dhaka or the US Department of State’s Consular Affairs and to enrol in the Smart Traveller Enrollment Program for security updates.
