US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has dismissed Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, a key military planner in the US armed forces, as President Donald Trump considers the possibility of launching renewed military operations against Iran.

Before his dismissal, Sylvia served as director of strategy, plans and policy on the US Joint Staff, a senior position that plays a significant role in shaping military strategy and operational planning.

Sylvia’s departure follows the earlier removal of Lieutenant General Joseph McGee, who previously held the same position and was also pushed into retirement under Hegseth’s leadership.

No official reason has so far been given for Sylvia’s dismissal.

A spokesperson for the US Joint Staff paid tribute to Sylvia’s 32-year military career in a statement to Al Jazeera.

“On behalf of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Joint Force, we extend our deep gratitude to Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia and his family for 32 distinguished years of service to our nation,” the spokesperson said.

The statement also wished Sylvia and his family well as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

Dismissal comes amid Iran tensions
Sylvia’s removal comes at a time when Washington is weighing possible new military action against Iran.

His former role was central to the development of military strategies and plans, making the dismissal notable amid discussions over the US military’s potential next steps.

However, no confirmed information has emerged establishing a direct connection between Sylvia’s dismissal and the situation involving Iran.

The circumstances surrounding his departure remain unclear, with the Pentagon yet to publicly explain the decision.
