Bangladesh and Japan have held a high-level bilateral meeting in Tokyo to strengthen economic relations and expand cooperation in alternative financing mechanisms beyond foreign direct investment (FDI).
The meeting took place on Friday at the Japanese Finance Ministry, between Bangladesh's Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama.
During the meeting, both sides recalled the longstanding and strong economic ties between the two countries and discussed ways to elevate their bilateral economic partnership and deepen cooperation.
The discussions placed particular emphasis on Bangladesh's infrastructure development, trade expansion and opportunities to enhance economic cooperation through alternative financing arrangements beyond conventional foreign direct investment.
Both sides agreed on the need to take effective initiatives to further strengthen existing economic ties and explore opportunities for collaboration in new sectors.
The meeting was also attended by Tanvir Gani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Investment and Capital Markets; Shakirul Islam Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Employment in the Asia-Pacific region; and senior officials from both countries.
Japan is one of Bangladesh's key development partners. Over the years, Japanese financing has supported several major infrastructure and social development projects in Bangladesh.
A number of important projects are currently being implemented with Japanese support, while new agreements are also being pursued, reflecting the continuing depth of economic cooperation between the two countries.
