Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, has expressed concern over a recent statement attributed to Bangladesh’s newly appointed Indian High Commissioner regarding the idea of Bangladesh and India “becoming one.”

In a post published on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, Dr. Shafiqur called on the government to seek a clear explanation from the Indian diplomat about the meaning and intent behind the remarks.

According to Dr. Shafiqur, the statement by Dinesh Trivedi, who recently arrived in Bangladesh to assume his role as India’s High Commissioner, has raised questions among the public. He said the government should formally ask the envoy to clarify what he meant by the phrase “Bangladesh and India becoming one.”

The Jamaat leader emphasized that both India and Bangladesh are independent and sovereign nations. He warned that ambiguous statements on such sensitive issues could create confusion and concern among citizens if left unexplained.

“We expect the government to provide clarity on this matter,” he said. “If the statement was intended in its literal sense, it would be highly inappropriate and deserving of criticism. The issue must be clarified.”

Dr. Shafiqur further argued that, in the interest of maintaining healthy bilateral relations and diplomatic courtesy between the two neighboring countries, an official explanation should be made public.

He urged the government to address the matter promptly to prevent misunderstandings and ensure transparency regarding the envoy’s comments.
