Swedish Ambassador Meets Bangladesh Opposition Leader to Discuss Bilateral Relations and Key National Issues

Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks paid a courtesy call on Opposition Leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, MP, at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in the National Parliament Building on Sunday.

The meeting was attended by officials from the Embassy of Sweden, including First Secretary Matilda Svensson and Second Secretary and Head of Trade, Political and Communications Affairs Olle Lundin.

According to participants, the discussion took place in a cordial and constructive atmosphere and covered a range of issues of mutual interest, including Bangladesh’s post-election situation, Bangladesh-Sweden bilateral relations, investment opportunities, and broader international affairs.

Both sides expressed optimism that Sweden’s longstanding support for Bangladesh would continue in the future. They also exchanged views on the prospects for increasing Swedish investment in Bangladesh.

The discussions further addressed a number of important policy issues, including the implementation of the July Charter, the execution of referendum outcomes, the potential implications of several recently debated ordinances, the proposed national budget, tax structure reforms, and efforts to find a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Participants also discussed various development projects in Bangladesh that are being supported through Swedish funding and cooperation.

Also present at the meeting were Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Kasem Arman, MP, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Opposition Leader, and Ali Ahmad Mabrur, a member of the Opposition Leader’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee.

The meeting reflected the continuing engagement between Bangladesh's political leadership and international partners on issues related to governance, economic development, and regional challenges.
