U.S. Treasury Secretary Says Iran Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Could Be Reached Soon

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed optimism that the United States and Iran could soon reach an agreement aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing the ongoing tensions in the region.

In an interview with CNBC, Bessent said the Trump administration is currently engaged in discussions with Tehran and that there is a strong possibility of reaching an agreement within the next one or two days to restore normal shipping through the strategic waterway.

Asked whether the proposed agreement would allow Iran to impose tariffs or transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, Bessent said the deal would instead be based on ensuring complete freedom of navigation for all commercial ships.

"The foundation of this agreement is to guarantee unrestricted passage for all vessels through the Strait of Hormuz," he said.

Bessent acknowledged that the situation in the region has remained tense in recent days but noted that several ships have already transited the waterway safely despite the heightened security concerns.

If finalized, the agreement would be aimed at reducing regional tensions, restoring confidence in one of the world's most important maritime trade routes, and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of global energy supplies.
