Bangladesh's Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir has said that Bangladesh would be able to transport goods to China by truck within 24 hours if it becomes connected to the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor.
The minister made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to reporters after attending a workshop and reception for newly enrolled lawyers at the Sylhet District Bar Association.
He said Bangladesh is expected to witness significant Chinese investment in the coming years, noting that China has already granted duty-free access to all Bangladeshi products.
"Our primary strategy is to attract more Chinese investment into Bangladesh," the commerce minister said, adding that stronger economic cooperation with China would create new opportunities for trade and industrial development.
Responding to a question about the management committee of the Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) Shrine, Muqtadir said no members had been appointed on political considerations. He maintained that the committee was formed in accordance with established rules and procedures, leaving no room for controversy.
Earlier, addressing the gathering of lawyers as the chief guest, the minister stressed the importance of the rule of law in a democratic state.
He said that when a culture of impunity prevails, the social contract and the rule of law become weakened. He also highlighted the vital role of lawyers in upholding constitutional rights, including equality, non-discrimination, the right to life and personal liberty, freedom of expression, and other fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens.
