In a major institutional overhaul, the Bangladesh government has initiated steps to disband the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and replace it with a newly restructured unit designated as the "Special Response Battalion (SRB)."
The Ministry of Home Affairs released the draft "Special Response Battalion (SRB) Act, 2026" on its official portal on Friday, inviting public feedback on the proposed legal and operational framework.
Under the draft legislation, the SRB will operate as a specialized force directly under the jurisdiction of Bangladesh Police, headed by a Director General holding the rank of Additional Inspector General of Police (Addl. IGP).
The force will feature a distinct uniform, flag, and official emblem. While police officers will form its core, personnel from other disciplined services can be deputed to the SRB for a minimum term of two years. Upon legislative enactment by the Parliament, current RAB-related statutes will stand repealed.
