A short-term special session of the National Parliament (Jatiya Sangshad) will be convened to facilitate the election of Bangladesh's 23rd President, Chief Whip of the ruling party Nurul Islam Moni confirmed on Thursday (August 7).
While confirming the upcoming parliamentary summons to reporters, Moni withheld the exact commencement date of the session.
The announcement closely follows the formal election schedule unveiled by the Election Commission (EC) earlier in the day. According to the timeline, nomination papers for the presidency must be submitted by August 13, followed by scrutiny on August 16, and withdrawal of candidature by August 18.
Voting will take place via secret ballot inside the Parliament chamber on August 20 between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, with Chief Election Commissioner A.M.M. Nasir Uddin serving as the returning officer. Under constitutional mandates, Members of Parliament elect the Head of State. Following the resignation of former President Md. Sahabuddin on July 24, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is currently serving as the Acting President of the Republic.
