The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has authorized its Chairman, Tareque Rahman, to make the final decision on the party’s nominee for the upcoming presidential election.

The announcement was made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir after a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee on Saturday.

The meeting began at 8:00 p.m. at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, and concluded at around 9:30 p.m. It was chaired by Tareque Rahman.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mirza Fakhrul said the Standing Committee had entrusted the party chairman with the responsibility of selecting the party’s presidential candidate.

He added that, in addition to the presidential election, the one-and-a-half-hour meeting focused on the country’s overall political situation. The committee also held detailed discussions on the upcoming local government elections.

Commenting on the meeting, Standing Committee member and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that, as the party’s leader, Prime Minister Tareque Rahman had been given the responsibility of finalizing the BNP’s presidential nominee.

Salahuddin Ahmed also said that once the Election Commission announces the election schedule, the government will consult with the Speaker of Parliament to determine whether a special parliamentary session is required to conduct the presidential election.
