Prime Minister has emphasized that instead of looting public resources under the guise of quick rental power plants, the government aims to resolve the nation's electricity crisis through cost-effective and sustainable solutions. He made these remarks while addressing the opening ceremony of the two-day ‘Bangladesh Solar Expo 2026’ held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center.
Highlighting the administration's commitment to alleviating public suffering regarding energy and power, the Prime Minister noted that comprehensive steps are underway to stabilize power supplies, review expenditure and previous contracts, boost domestic gas exploration, and rapidly expand solar energy. Ensuring long-term energy security remains a top priority for the administration.
Outlining renewable energy targets, the Prime Minister stated that the government plans to generate 20 percent of total electricity demand from renewable sources by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040. To assist entrepreneurs, an initial fund of BDT 1,500 crore has been allocated to ease financing in the sector. Furthermore, a startup fund of BDT 500 crore has been kept in the current budget to support youth innovation.
The Prime Minister expressed hope that 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of solar power will be added to the national grid before the upcoming summer season. He encouraged utilizing unused rooftops for solar installations and announced that the government will purchase surplus electricity from net-metering systems at BDT 10.50 per unit. Initiatives are also being taken to transition electric irrigation pumps to solar-powered ones to reduce agricultural costs, alongside welcoming expatriate investments in the renewable sector.
