BNP Nominates Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for Bangladesh Presidency

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, is set to become Bangladesh's next president after Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman finalized his nomination, according to senior party sources.

A senior BNP leader confirmed the development to Daily Wada, saying the party has decided to nominate its long-serving secretary general for the presidency. The leader said Tarique Rahman has "almost certainly" finalized Mirza Fakhrul's name as the party's candidate.

Daily Wada also spoke to several other senior BNP leaders, most of whom said the final decision rested solely with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. While they said they had not received an official confirmation of his choice, a leader close to the prime minister stated that Mirza Fakhrul had indeed been selected as the party's presidential nominee.

Meanwhile, the BNP on Sunday collected two presidential nomination forms from the Election Commission. The documents were obtained from the Returning Officer's office at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon by BNP Vice Chairman and Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam Moni and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Earlier, the party's National Standing Committee had authorized Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to select the BNP's presidential candidate. With the BNP holding a parliamentary majority, the party's nominee is widely expected to become Bangladesh's 23rd President, barring any unexpected changes in parliamentary support.

The Election Commission has scheduled the presidential election for August 20. If required, voting will take place in Parliament between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. However, if Mirza Fakhrul emerges as the only valid candidate, no parliamentary vote will be necessary, and he could be declared elected unopposed.

The presidency became vacant on July 24 after Mohammad Shahabuddin resigned, citing health reasons. Since then, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has been serving as Acting President. Under the Constitution of Bangladesh and the Presidential Election Act, 1991, a presidential election must be held within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.
