Jamaat Informally Announces Mayoral Candidates for Dhaka North and South

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has informally announced its candidates for mayor of the Dhaka North and Dhaka South city corporations ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

The party announced the names on Monday, September 14. Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar disclosed the candidates’ names while speaking to journalists after an event in the capital.

Porwar said Jamaat-e-Islami is an election-oriented political party and has been making organizational preparations to participate in local government elections.

“We have completed the organizational preparations for the local government elections,” Porwar said. “We are now at the final stage of completing the nomination process for candidates at the union parishad, upazila, municipality and city corporation levels across the country. In many areas, we have already internally announced our candidates.”

He said Jamaat plans to contest both Dhaka city corporation elections and has already selected its candidates.

“We will, God willing, participate in the elections in the two Dhaka city corporations as well. We have organizationally nominated our candidates here too,” Porwar said. “We will officially announce the candidates at the appropriate time. The names have already appeared in the media: Selim Uddin in Dhaka North and Sadik Kayem in Dhaka South.”

According to the party, Mohammad Selim Uddin will contest the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral election as Jamaat’s candidate, using the party’s election symbol, the scales.

Selim Uddin currently serves as the Ameer of Jamaat’s Dhaka North unit. He is also a member of the party’s Central Executive Council. Before joining Jamaat-e-Islami, he served as the central president of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the party’s student wing.

For the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election, Jamaat has selected Abu Sadik Kayem, who currently serves as the vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).

Kayem played a prominent role as a coordinator during the 2024 student-led mass uprising in Bangladesh. He was later elected DUCSU vice-president in the student union election held in September last year.

Kayem also served as president of the Dhaka University unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir during the organization’s 2024 session. He subsequently served as the organization’s central secretary for international affairs.

Jamaat’s decision to field candidates in both Dhaka city corporations comes as the party steps up preparations for the upcoming local government elections. The party has indicated that it is working to finalize candidates across different tiers of local government nationwide.
