The number of bank accounts in Bangladesh holding more than Tk 1 crore (Tk 10 million) increased by 5,077 during the April-June quarter, according to the latest data from Bangladesh Bank.

At the same time, total deposits in these accounts rose by Tk 16,498 crore over the three-month period.

Despite the increase in the overall number of millionaire accounts, deposits held by individuals in such accounts declined. The overall growth was driven largely by higher deposits in accounts belonging to government and private institutions.

According to Bangladesh Bank data, the total number of deposit accounts in the country’s banking sector stood at 18.64 crore as of the end of June. Of these, 141,562 accounts held deposits exceeding Tk 1 crore.

At the end of March, the number of such accounts stood at 136,485. This means the number of accounts holding more than Tk 1 crore increased by 5,077 in just three months.

The central bank data also show that total deposits in these accounts stood at Tk 8.59 lakh crore at the end of March. By the end of June, the figure had risen to Tk 8.76 lakh crore, representing an increase of Tk 16,498 crore during the quarter.

The trend among individual account holders was notably different.

By the end of June, the number of individual accounts holding more than Tk 1 crore stood at 40,701, compared with 40,630 at the end of March.

Thus, the number of millionaire accounts held by individuals increased by just 71 during the three-month period.

However, total deposits in these individual accounts declined from Tk 91,352 crore in March to Tk 90,131 crore in June—a decrease of Tk 1,221 crore.

The figures indicate that while the number of high-value deposit accounts continued to grow, the increase in total deposits was largely concentrated in accounts belonging to organizations rather than individuals.

Overall, Bangladesh’s banking sector ended the June quarter with more than 141,000 accounts holding deposits above Tk 1 crore, reflecting continued growth in high-value deposits despite a decline in individual holdings.
