Bangladesh Seeks Greater UK Cooperation in Education, Technology and Investment

Bangladesh has called for greater cooperation from the United Kingdom in education, human resource development and technology, while also urging stronger business and investment ties between the two countries.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the call on Monday when British High Commissioner Sarah Cook paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.

During the meeting, the high commissioner handed over a congratulatory letter from King Charles III on the president’s election. President Alamgir expressed his gratitude to the British monarch for the gesture.

The president sought greater opportunities for Bangladeshi students to pursue higher education in the UK, including an increase in Commonwealth scholarships. He also called for British support to strengthen the capacity of educational and technology institutions in Bangladesh.

He emphasized the importance of regular communication, reciprocal visits and exchanges of experience between lawmakers of the two countries.

The British high commissioner said that around 99.99 percent of Bangladeshi products, including ready-made garments, would continue to enjoy duty-free access to the UK market for an additional three years after Bangladesh graduates from the UN’s Least Developed Country (LDC) category.

The president described the extended duty-free access as an important opportunity to expand bilateral trade between Bangladesh and the UK.

The two sides also discussed an initiative for digital climate data exchange between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. President Alamgir welcomed the initiative, saying it could help improve the accuracy of weather forecasts and contribute to higher agricultural production.

The meeting underscored the two countries’ shared interest in expanding cooperation in education, technology, trade, investment and climate-related initiatives.
