Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostaqur Rahman has urged India to increase imports of goods from Bangladesh to help improve the bilateral trade balance.
He made the call on Tuesday when Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi paid a courtesy visit to the Bangladesh Bank headquarters.
During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on strengthening bilateral economic, trade and financial relations between Bangladesh and India.
The governor stressed the need for India to increase imports from Bangladesh as part of efforts to address the existing trade imbalance between the two countries.
The discussions also covered expanding the use of Bangla QR, cross-border digital payments, and possible technical cooperation based on India's experience in the sector. Governor Mostaqur expressed interest in learning from India's experience in developing and expanding digital payment systems.
The Indian high commissioner emphasized the need to further facilitate foreign investment in Bangladesh. In response, the governor said Bangladesh Bank had already taken several investment-friendly policy measures that would enable foreign investors to repatriate their invested capital and profits more easily.
The governor also called for greater Indian investment in Bangladesh's technology-driven, manufacturing and industrial sectors.
Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Kumar Badhe and Second Secretary (Economic and Commerce) Gaurav Kumar Agarwal attended the meeting.
Deputy Governors Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman and Md. Sarwar Hossain represented Bangladesh Bank at the meeting.
