Canada has voiced strong opposition to any potential tariffs imposed by the United States in pursuit of bringing Greenland under US control. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Tuesday that such tariffs would be unacceptable under any circumstances.

Speaking at the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Carney said, “Canada opposes the use of tariffs over the Greenland issue. We are calling for focused dialogue to ensure security and prosperity in the Arctic region.”

Earlier on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on European allies who have opposed Washington’s efforts to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty.

Carney reaffirmed Canada’s support for Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and said that, despite strained relations with the Trump administration in Washington, Canada is keen to build new alliances with like-minded countries.

It is worth noting that President Trump had previously threatened to annex Canada into the United States. On Tuesday, he shared an AI-generated map depicting Canada and Greenland as parts of US territory.

Without directly naming the United States or Trump, Carney warned, “If great powers abandon even the pretense of rules and values in the unchecked pursuit of their interests, it becomes difficult to sustain the benefits of transactional diplomacy.”

Carney, a former governor of both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, has recently concluded an agreement with China. He said it is essential for Canada to maintain a broad international network of partnerships. Referring to relations with Beijing, Carney added, “There are clear boundaries in that relationship. But within those limits, there is enormous mutually beneficial potential in energy—both clean and conventional—agriculture, and financial services.”

Canada’s remarks underscore growing unease among US allies over Washington’s increasingly assertive rhetoric on territorial expansion and the use of economic pressure in foreign policy.
