Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed initiative known as the “Board of Peace.” Netanyahu accepted the invitation on Wednesday, according to a statement posted by his office on social media.
Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera reported that Netanyahu’s participation is likely to make the initiative even more controversial, as the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant against him over alleged war crimes committed during Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip.
Since the idea of the so-called Board of Peace was unveiled, several world leaders have reportedly been invited to join. Citing sources, Middle East Eye earlier reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was among the first leaders to receive an invitation. On Sunday, countries including Egypt, India, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia also confirmed that they had been invited and were considering whether to participate.
According to Middle East Eye, the proposed Board of Peace could emerge as a future rival to the United Nations if implemented. The initiative is intended to act as a mediator in conflicts around the world.
Documents reviewed by Middle East Eye suggest that Trump, as chairman of the Board of Peace, would hold sweeping powers, including the authority to admit or remove member states. Decisions taken by the board could only be overturned if two-thirds of its members vote against them. The documents also state that a country could secure three years of membership by contributing $1 billion in the first year.
The initiative has drawn sharp scrutiny from critics, who question both its legitimacy and the implications of granting such extensive authority to a single individual, particularly amid ongoing global conflicts and allegations of war crimes involving some prospective members.
