Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has emphasized the need for an indigenous and inclusive security system in the Middle East amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. In an interview with Al Jazeera on Thursday he stated that regional stability should be built on mutual confidence rather than external deterrence.

Fidan pointed out that the lack of trust among Gulf nations is the main barrier to effective cooperation. Citing the European Union as a model he questioned why regional states cannot form a similar responsible alliance. He envisioned a system free from any Turkish Arab or Persian hegemony ensuring a balanced partnership for all. He also reaffirmed Turkeys commitment to facilitating a sustainable ceasefire in Syria through ongoing diplomatic efforts.
