Amid growing global tensions, North Korea has showcased its military capabilities by successfully test-firing a cruise missile from a newly built naval destroyer, according to state media.
The test was conducted under the supervision of the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un, who personally observed the launch.
According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missile was launched from a newly developed destroyer named Cho Hyon. The vessel was officially launched on Wednesday from the Nampo Shipyard on the country’s western coast.
KCNA reported that the warship, weighing around 500 tons and built using domestic naval technology, carried out the successful cruise missile test during its debut operations.
Speaking at the ship’s launch ceremony, Kim stressed the importance of modernizing the country’s navy. He said North Korea’s naval forces would soon gain the capability to strike both underwater and on the surface.
Kim also stated that plans to equip the navy with nuclear weapons were progressing steadily.
“We will soon ensure that our navy can deliver strikes both beneath and above the sea,” he said, adding that the nuclear armament of naval forces is moving forward positively.
Praising the military achievement, Kim described the development as a major breakthrough in strengthening the country’s maritime defense.
He said the recent progress represents a “historic transformation” in protecting North Korea’s maritime sovereignty — something he claimed had not been achieved over the past five decades.
Analysts say Pyongyang’s latest demonstration of naval firepower could further heighten geopolitical tensions in the region.
